Andrea Kemler
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Andrea believes that her professional life and educational background reflect the on-going internal contest between the left and right sides of her brain. She has a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Yale. Before graduate school, she worked for a Japanese television network. She practiced architecture for a number of years in Washington, DC and worked as an investment banker in New York City. She has lived and studied in Japan and Ireland. After leaving the paid work force in her early forties to become a mother, she developed a degree of proficiency in landscape painting and gardening.
Andrea is represented by the Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, MA. Her smaller prints are available at the Artica Gallery in South Duxbury and Limited Editions in Newton Highlands.
ABOUT THE BOTANICAL PRINTS
I began scanning leaves in a haphazard way in the fall of 2001 to create print stock that I would later use to decoupage wood and glass objects. The following spring, as my garden started to bloom, I began to experiment with working with natural material on a flat bed scanner in an attempt to design arrangements that would capture and accentuate the color, texture, shape and color again of the flora from my neighborhood.
In some ways my images are reminiscent of Flemish still life paintings with their dramatic contrasts and vibrant colors. But I think that they equally reflect an Asian aesthetic. My approach in laying out and designing my images is directly influenced by my study of flower arrangement during my two years in Japan as a student.
The end-product, my art work, exists specifically as limited edition giclée prints.
